About Us
Chatteris is a great place to live, work and visit. The safe and friendly environment of this growing town is ideal for young families and new businesses. Although not large, Chatteris can boast a good range of amenities, catering for the needs of its citizens and visitors alike. There is a vibrant community life, supporting many social and cultural activity groups.
A range of retail facilities satisfy most domestic shopping needs, together with a small thriving street market on Fridays. Large retail shopping parks are situated at Peterborough to the west of Chatteris, Cambridge to the south, Ely to the east and March to the north.
The South Fens Business Centre offers small businesses an opportunity to become established at favourable rents and rates. Good road access to the surrounding towns (which have railway stations) ensures Chatteris is a convenient base for commuters, and for those wishing to access the many major tourist attractions in the area.
Healthcare is provided by a team of doctors and support staff at the George Clare Surgery in Swan Drive, supported by specialist services available at Doddington Hospital 3 miles distant.
The town now boasts a state of the art public gym and all weather pitch along with other sports facilities including football pitches, tennis courts and a bowls green.
Religion is represented by Anglian and Catholic congregations meeting at the Parish Church in Market Hill, the Emmanuel Church and the Salvation Army Fortress – both situated in East Park Street – and by the Chatteris Community Church meeting at the King Edward Centre.
Local schools have a reputation for providing a good standard of education to the age of 18 years. Primary age children attend Kingsfield or Glebelands Schools, both well equipped in modern premises, whilst secondary education is provided at Cromwell Community College. The County Library Service offers excellent facilities, including access to the internet. The library is now part of Chatteris Community Hub which is also home to Fenland@Your Service, run by Fenland District Council.
The town museum’s extensive collection is exhibited in a building shared with the Town Council in Church Lane.
The University town of Cambridge is deservedly one of Britain’s major tourist attractions. In addition to its wealth of ancient buildings, many of which are open to the public, there are riverside parks and gardens, and several nationally important museums including the Fitzwilliam, the Scott Polar Institute, and the Imperial War Museum at nearby Duxford. Peterborough and Ely have magnificent mediaeval cathedrals, interesting town centres, and riverside parks and gardens, including Nene Park to the west of Peterborough. Smaller towns within easy reach include Huntingdon and St Ives with their Cromwellian associations, and Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds.
Several large houses and estates belonging to the National Trust are within easy driving distance, including Wimpole Hall, Oxborough Hall, Peckover House, and Anglesey Abbey. Sandringham, the private residence of H.M. the Queen, is frequently open to the public. There is horse racing at Newmarket and Huntingdon and the National Horse Racing Museum and the National Stud, are also situated at Newmarket. Wimpole Home Farm, Wood Green Animal Shelter at Godmanchester, and the Raptor sanctuary at Somersham are popular venues, particularly for children. For lovers of nature, the surrounding fens are a rich and diverse resource, including some of the world’s most important wetland wildfowl habitats. At Wicken, mid-way between Cambridge and Ely, remnants of original un-reclaimed fen, managed by the National Trust, recall impressions of the untamed wilderness which once surrounded Chatteris whilst Welney Wetland Centre is an important nature reserve for migratory birds.
